Based on the development of data, the phenomenon of M 6.4 earthquakes has had 13 aftershocks with a strength from M 3.5 to a maximum of M 6.4. The series of earthquakes occurred in the Mentawai megathrust segment which is known to store earthquake energy potential up to M 8.9, and has the potential to trigger a tsunami.
The reported damage to the earthquake included one building of SMP N 3 Simalegi lightly damaged, one unit of SDN 11 Simalegi heavily damaged, one building of Puskesmas Betaet lightly damaged, one church lightly damaged, one building of the west Siberut sub-district office hall lightly damaged and others still under data collection.
The earthquake shock, which was felt quite strongly on Siberut Island, has also forced 2,326 residents to evacuate to the hills. The increase in the number of refugees was triggered by community concerns if there was an aftershock that could have the potential for a tsunami.
Meanwhile, to date there have been no reports of casualties and the situation and conditions are safely under control.
