President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) directly announced an increase in fuel prices. He said fuel subsidies would be diverted for more targeted assistance.
“The prices of several types of fuel that have been subsidized will be adjusted,” said Jokowi through his press statement, Saturday, September 3, 2022.
He wants the price of fuel in the country to remain affordable by providing fuel subsidies. However, he said the fuel subsidy budget continues to rise.
“However, the fuel subsidy and compensation budget in 2022 has increased 3 times from IDR 152.5 trillion to IDR 502.4 trillion and will continue to increase,” he said.
According to him, 70 percent currently, fuel subsidies are more widely used by economically capable groups. He emphasized that raising fuel prices is a last resort.
“The country’s money should be prioritized to subsidize the poor. And now the government has to make decisions at a difficult time,” he said.
“And some of the fuel subsidies will be diverted for more targeted assistance. Direct cash assistance (BLT) for fuel amounted to Rp 12.4 trillion which was given to 20.65 million underprivileged families amounting to Rp 150 thousand per month and began to be given in September for 4 months,” he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif said that the new subsidized fuel tariff took effect today. “This is valid for 1 hour from the moment this price adjustment is announced. Effective at 14.30 WIB, “said Arifin.
According to him, the turmoil in world oil prices is causing uncertainty. This has a significant impact on the State Budget (APBN). In addition to burdening the state budget, subsidies and compensation are mostly enjoyed by the poor.
Furthermore, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif announced that starting from Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 14.30 WIB, the Government decided to adjust fuel prices.
The fuel that has increased is Pertalite from Rp7,650 per liter to Rp10,000 per liter. Subsidized Diesel from IDR 5,150 per liter to IDR 6,800 per liter. Meanwhile, non-subsidized Pertamax also increased from IDR 12,500 per liter to IDR 14,500 per liter.
